Turning Right - Making the Turn

“You have now checked your mirrors at least twice, signalled your intention to turn and thought about your position, speed and gear. But, before turning, you need to make some final checks to make sure that it is safe.

The first check is for approaching traffic. You must give way to approaching traffic when turning right when turning right. If there is approaching traffic, stop and wait in a position from which you can easily turn into the new road.

Take care not to stop too far forwards. The exact position will vary from one junction to another and will depend on the width of the road that you were turning into. The wider the road, the further forward you can stop.

If there is no approaching traffic, you can continue without stopping but, whether you stop or not, there are more checks to make.

Look into the new road for cars, stationary traffic or other obstructions that might prevent you from turning. Be prepared to give way to any pedestrians who may cross in front of you.

Glance in your right door mirror to make sure that no one is overtaking. If it is safe, steer into the junction, looking well ahead into the new road. Look through the driver’s door window as you steer. After turning, make sure that your signal is cancelled and then check your mirrors for anything that might prevent you from increasing your speed.

The key points are:

– You must give way to approaching traffic.
– Make sure that the road you are turning into is clear.
– Be prepared to give way to pedestrians.
– Check your right door mirror for overtaking traffic.
– Look well ahead into the new road as you turn.”
