Turning Right - Hazards

“When approaching junctions to turn right, you will be using the hazard routine, sometimes known as the mirror, signal, manoeuvre routine.

The routine starts with mirrors. You need to know what’s behind to ensure that it’s safe to complete the manoeuvre.

Signal, you cannot signal until you have checked your mirrors and know who you’re signalling to.

Position, you will need to consider your signal before changing position, otherwise other road users will not know what you intend to do.

Speed and gear, if changing lanes you may need to wait until you are in position before slowing down so that you do not hold up following drivers.

Look and turn, here you make your final safety checks to ensure that it’s safe to complete the manoeuvre.

By using the hazard routine, you will help to ensure that you know what is happening all around and that other road users know what you intend to do.

In the next five videos, we will look at each part of the routine in detail.”
