The Importance of the Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception Test is essential for every learner’s journey to becoming a fully licensed driver. But why is it so important? What would happen if we skipped this crucial stage?

The answer to that is fairly obvious. Without being able to detect hazards, learners are a much higher risk on the road.

WHAT IS IT?

DRIVE Driving School Questions

The Hazard Perception test is part of every driving theory test. It involves a series of videos with hidden hazards which the learner must pick up on in order to pass.

For example, one video could be of a car driving down the high street and another car attempts to pull out at a junction. The learner is expected to pick up on this in order to demonstrate their observation skills and that they’re paying attention whilst driving a vehicle.

All the hazard perception tests available come under a whole manner of weather conditions, some with hazards unique to that environment. They all, however, test the learner’s ability to pick up on these hazards as and when they occur.

HOW IT WILL HELP

On the surface, hazard perception tests may be terrifying for learners as it’s truly the first time they’re going to be tested on their knowledge of the road.

However, it is a much better tool at demonstrating their competence as filling out a lot of questions on paper can be hard to visualise. It also better examines your reflexes as it’s easier to determine your reaction time to a hazard in the real world.

We recommend that, as part of your theory test, you take mock hazard perception tests so that you feel better prepared before you sit the real thing. You can practise it with a DVD or take a free mock test online.

PREP FOR PRACTICAL

In addition to demonstrating what you have learned so far, Hazard Perception Tests help you prepare for your practical examination if nothing else. While it’s not the same as actually driving, it can be pretty useful in detecting real-life hazards without putting yourself in danger.
