Left Turns - Test Day

“Your driving test route will include a number of left turns in different situations, ranging from quiet back streets to busy junctions. The driving test examiner will ask you to turn in good time before a turn.

You might be prompted to turn by road signs or a sat-nav during the independent drive section of the test. During left turns, the examiner will be watching to make sure that you make proper use of mirrors.

Give correct, well-timed signals. Take up the correct road position for position for the junction. Keep the car under full control and deal with other road users correctly.

Use your mirrors before signalling and then, as many times as necessary during the manoeuvre, check for cyclists on the left – Especially in slow moving traffic.

Signal in good time but be careful not to mislead others into thinking that you are pulling up on the left. Take special care when there are two junctions close together.

Take up the correct road position, in some situations this might mean moving into a left turn lane control.

Approach at a speed that suits the road and traffic conditions, making any gear changes before you start to steer around the corner. Be alert to the actions of all other road users. Being prepared to give way to any pedestrians who are crossing the road that you are turning into.
