Failed on the Emergency Stop

“Well, we’ve got another driving test myth for you here. This this is from Johnny. Hello, Johnny. Johnny says “I failed the emergency stopped, but I stopped really well.”

Well, thanks for that. The emergency stop needs to be done under full control, safely and promptly. However, most emergency stops on test, if it’s a fail, it’s because you’ve not moved off safely and carefully enough. Remember, you’re stationary in the road. You’re in the middle of your lane and you’ve got space to the left and right because you didn’t pull up in a park position against the car, against the curb.

You’re in the middle of the road on your side of the road. So traffic approaching you from the rear, cyclists, motorcyclists, any vehicles, cars, vans, anybody, anybody could be passing you from the left or from your right. They may not realize why you’re stationary there. They might not have seen the hazard that you’ve pulled up for.

So be careful that you take a breath, keep calm, and it’s the moving off that can often be the problem. So remember to do your six-point check to make sure you’re moving off safely. And that should keep you away from a fault or a fail.”
