The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced significant changes to how driving tests are booked and managed, coming into effect from spring 2026. These updates are designed to make the system fairer, reduce abuse, and help tackle long waiting times.
We’re here to break down what this means for you—and how to prepare.
The changes
You must book your own driving test
From spring 2026, only the learner driver will be able to book and manage their test. Driving instructors will no longer be able to do this on your behalf.
This means:
– You’ll book directly through GOV.UK
– You’ll manage dates, changes, and cancellations yourself
– You’ll still need guidance from your instructor before booking
At DRIVE, we’ll continue to advise you on when you’re test-ready, but the final booking step will be in your hands.
Strict limits on test changes
From 31 March 2026, you can only make 2 changes to your test booking (down from 6).
A “change” includes:
– Altering the date or time
– Switching test centres
– Swapping appointments with another learner
If you exceed this limit, you’ll need to cancel and rebook, which could mean longer waiting times.
Restricted Test Centre Changes
You will only be able to move your test to nearby test centres rather than anywhere in the country.
This is aimed at stopping people from:
– Booking tests in low-demand areas
– Then moving them to high-demand locations later
Why are these changes happening?
The DVSA is tackling several long-standing issues:
– Bots and third parties bulk-booking tests
– Reselling appointments at inflated prices
– Long waiting times across the UK
By limiting changes and requiring learners to book themselves, the system should become fairer and more transparent.
This new system rewards prepared, committed learners.
While it may feel stricter, it ultimately encourages:
– Better test readiness
– Fewer last-minute cancellations
– A fairer booking system for everyone
Final Thoughts
The 2026 booking changes are a big shift—but with the right preparation, they won’t hold you back.
At DRIVE, we’ll continue to:
– Guide you through every step
– Help you decide the right time to book
– Support you in passing first time
If you have any questions about these changes or your test readiness, speak to your instructor—we’re here to help you succeed!
