Part 1
PDIs and Learners often make the same mistake. They focus on passing the theory test, not learning AND understanding the content. Keep in mind that this is going to be your job! If you don’t understand it, dig deeper.
Like it’s Learner counterpart there are 2 sections to the Theory Test, and you must pass both in the same sitting.
Multiple Choice Questions – These are based on knowledge from:
– The Highway Code
– Know your traffic signs
– Driving – the essential skills
– The official theory test for Approved Driving Instructors pack
– The Driving Instructor’s Handbook
These are not the only useful resources – Others can be found here
You have 1 hour 30 minutes to answer 100 Questions. There are 25 questions in each of the 4 categories:
– Road procedure
– Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
– Driving test, disabilities, and the law
– Publications and instructional techniques
You need to achieve both:
– An overall score of at least 85 correct questions out of 100
– At least 20 correct questions out of 25 in each of the 4 categories of questions
Hazard Perception – The key is again in understanding. Look for Potential Hazards becoming Developing Hazards and Developing Hazards becoming Serious Hazards. There are 14 video clips containing 15 marked hazards. Each hazard is scored from 5 down to 0 (with early clicks being scored at zero). You need to score at least 57 out of 75.
REMEMBER: Once you’ve passed the theory test, you must pass the other parts of the test within 2 years or you’ll have to start the whole process again.
