Part 2 test of driving ability
The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Part 2 test is a test of your driving ability.
It’s the second of 3 tests you have to pass to qualify as an ADI.
Overview
There are 5 parts to the test:
1. an eyesight check;
2. ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions;
3. general driving ability;
4. manoeuvres;
5. independent driving.
To pass the test you must be able to:
– drive safely in different road and traffic conditions;
– show that you know The Highway Code by the way you drive.
The National Standard For Driving tells you everything you must be able to do to pass the test.
This is what our syllabus and training covers.
Before getting in the car
1. Eyesight Test:
You must be able to read a registration plate at a distance of 26.5 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate.
2. Vehicle Safety Questions:
At the start of the test you will be asked basic vehicle safety and maintenance questions. You will also be asked to complete ‘safety tasks’ while driving. These are sometimes called ‘Show me/Tell me’ questions.
DRIVING
3. General Driving Ability:
You have to demonstrate expert control, correct road procedure, anticipation and consideration of others, good judgement of speed and distance.
4. Reversing Your Vehicle:
The test includes some basic set manoeuvres. You’ll be asked to perform 2 of these and you might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
5. Independent Driving:
You’ll be asked to drive for approx 20 minutes following road signs or use of a sat-nav and driving in an eco-friendly way.
The test last for about one hour and you are permitted up to a maximum of six driving faults.
After the test
Test Result:
There are 3 types of faults that can be marked:
– a dangerous fault is one that involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
– a serious fault is one could potentially be dangerous
– a driving fault is not potentially dangerous, but if you make the same fault a number of times it could become a serious fault
You’ll pass the test if you make no more than 6 driving faults and/or no serious or dangerous faults.
Cost:
You have 3 attempts at this test. Should you fail the 3rd attempt, you will have to wait for the 2 year period to end (that started when you passed Part 1) and sit Part 1 again.
You must pay the DVSA £111 for this test.
Start teaching
Once you have passed Part 2 you will start getting practice teaching real pupils – and earning.
You can continue working in your current job while you start teaching real life pupils to get experience, ‘earn as you learn’ and start building your diary ready to leave your current job when you are ready.
