Moving Off & Stopping - Test Day

“You will have to move off and stop several times on your driving test. Both when requested by the examiner and in traffic queues and other situations.

The examiner will usually ask you to complete an angle start and, where the area allows, a hill start. It’s possible that these might be combined. You might also be asked to stop on the right-hand side of the road.

You will need to make sure that you stop and start safely before and after any specific driving test manoeuvre. Pay special attention to these situations, because it’s easy to be distracted tby the thought of the manoeubre that you are about to perform.

Use the Prepare, Observe and Move routine every time you move off on the test and the MSM routine evenytime you stop.

Here are some examples of moving off and stopping during the test:

When you’re ready, then we’ll move away.

Okay

Examiners will always give clear instructions when they want you to move off or stop. This might be before or after a manoeuvre or simply at the side of the road.

In traffic, you will need to stop and move off safely at traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and many other places.

Wherever you move off and stop, the examiner will want to see that you can do it safely and legally.

The key points are:

– You will move off and stop several times during the test.

– You will be asked to do an angle-start.

– You may be asked to do a hill start

– You may be asked to stop on the right

– Always use your POM and MSM Routines

– The examiner will assess safety, control and accuracy.”
