The Dangers of Hands-Free Mobile Use

Developed by the Kier Group, Kier Foundation and Nottingham Trent University, and funded by The Road Safety Trust, the below video was developed to debunk the myths surrounding the use of hands-free mobiles and bring to awareness the dangers surrounding them, with the ultimate aim of reducing their use by professional drivers.

While the use of hands-free mobile devices is legal, the information provided by studies has found that hands-free phone calls can be just as likely to distract a driver as a handheld call.

With these results in mind, more companies are attempting to ban the use of mobile phone calls, both handheld and hands-free, while driving for work. However, they are struggling to get drivers to stick to this new rule.

With a survey of over 400 fleet drivers and a focus group of experts, the project identified the myths that are used to validate hands-free mobile use and produced the video in order to debunk them. The myths used are:

– It is legal so it can’t be unsafe.
– Driving is ‘dead time’.
– It’s safe because your hands are on your car and your eyes are looking ahead.
– It’s the same as if you had a passenger.
– It’s necessary for my job.

If you find the video below useful, make sure to share it and spread the message to help bring awareness to the dangers of hands-free mobile use.
