Applying for your DBS

This information applies to England, Scotland and Wales – the procedure is different in Northern Ireland. If you live in Northern Ireland – click here for information.

To get a Criminal record check (DBS) to become a driving instructor, you need to apply on-line.

You will also need proof of your identity – such as Driving Licence, Passport, ID card, Marriage Certificate, and Utility Bills etc – so it may be worth digging some of these out now!

Proving your identity

When you’ve finished the online application, you must give proof of your identity.

You can do this at a Post Office offering the ‘CRB and ID verification service’.

You’ll need to take a printed page from your online application with barcodes on it and 3 original forms of ID (not copies).

These can be:
• your passport
• your driving licence
• a utility bill that’s less than 3 months old
• a bank statement that’s less than 3 months old

The service costs £8.22 which you pay at the Post Office.

After completing the steps above you will be sent a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) certificate that shows a disclosure number.

When you have your disclosure number you will be able to register with the DVSA to obtain a Personal Reference Number (PRN). We explain the registration process in the next step.

IMPORTANT

You do not have to wait for your DBS certificate or Registration process to be complete in order to continue with the course.

You must apply for your DBS check and register with the DVSA as soon as possible in order to avoid delays or other problems with training and qualification.
